MMLC Announces VHS Phase-Out
Starting in Spring Quarter, the MMLC will begin a several-months-long process of phasing out formal support of VHS video content. The VHS format has become increasingly outmoded and costly to support. In order to focus efforts on newer formats including DVD, BluRay, and digital streaming, we will follow other campus units (NU Library, Classroom Technologies Group) who have initiated similar transitions.
In the 2013-2014 academic year, the MMLC will be making two significant changes:
- 1) VHS Collections will no longer be housed by the MMLC. During the next two quarters, the MMLC will work with individual language departments to determine which tapes should be replaced or digitized. Chairs, Department Assistants and Language Program coordinators will receive a follow-up email.
- 2) Support for VHS playback will be reduced. As VCRs in the lab and classrooms fail, they will not be replaced.
The MMLC will continue to house and support DVD collections, eventually adding support for BluRay at viewing stations in the lab. We will also continue to provide the same digitization services.
We want to make this transition as easy as possible, and your feedback is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Sarah at firstname.lastname@example.orgPosted
